What exactly does Liberating Leaders do?
At Liberating Leaders we provide hands on coaching and support to teachers, predominately those that teach black students, to create culturally responsive and affirming classrooms across Chicago.
Cool. That sounds great, but why does that matter? I mean, this is how education has always been.
Another dope question. This is important because as the cliche' goes, "the children are our future". Currently the majority of urban schools teach to regurgitate information which eliminates the need to critically think and problem solve. We are currently functioning in dysfunctional education system for students of color and we aren't doing anything about it. Creating new experiences for our children to be educated and affirmed in the process, enhances student performance astronomically. Allowing students to see representations of who they are and the possibilities of what they could be IS the change necessary to change this jacked up system from within and it starts with investing this level of intentional work in our teachers.
I keep seeing the phrase "culturally responsive". What does that mean?
I'm glad you asked! To be culturally responsive when it comes to teaching means that your classroom, everything from the way you consequence and reward to the stories your students read, represents their culture. It's like seeing yourself represented in your learning.
Are the workshops the same each time?
NOPE!!!! No workshop will ever be exactly the same unless it is offered and advertised again as such. No false flaggin' over here. Based on surveys, member and participant requests, and detailed, INTENTIONAL programming, each session will hit on a new component of creating that classroom environment we want to see, but never abandoning any of the skills and principals we've covered in the past. And don't worry, if you don't attend every workshop (although you should), there will always be extra material and opportunities to keep up. No person left behind with these programs.
I'm not in education, but how can I support?
You don't have to formally be in education to attend any of the workshops, sessions, etc. We are ALL responsible for the well being and EQUITABLE educating of OUR students. It's not just on the teachers or principals. We all play a role in perpetuating white dominant, toxic culture. It is not our job to dismantle a system we did not create, but it IS our job to continually do OUR work to create affirming spaces for our students to find comfort in once they leave these dope classes we are creating. So, see which sessions work for you and what you, keep an eye out for ur nonprofit that will be revealed soon by joining our mailing list, and DONATE via our Link on the HOME page. This work takes funding and every penny counts.
How does your membership program work?
Membership works in two ways. Updated content descriptions will be loaded on our page after each workshop. If you attend the workshop, you have an opportunity to get the early bird pricing for a 3 month or month to month membership. You get access to online live and recorded sessions, downloadable materials and resources, exclusive access to our Facebook group for questions and check-ins with other members, and occasional surprise gifts. What can I say, membership has its perks!
